Technologies

MediaMaker is developed on the latest standard technologies to secure our customers the most future-proof solutions and to maximize the development possibilities of our product.

Xstream always aim to continuously optimize our technologies to guarantee our customers secure working processes and the best user experiences, allowing them to focus on making profit from their streaming activities.

We develop in a range of technologies :

Xstream operates with open-source software

Xstream operates with open-source software projects which mean that our day-to-day software operations are handled in PHP.

The PHP code is executed via Apache, hosted on FreeBSD servers and controlled by two Foundry load balancers in a High Availability setup. In peak periods this setup can handle more than 6000 hits per second. Traffic is registered using MySQL servers which also make the exposure extremely dynamic.

PHP, Apache and MySQL compose the foundation in our setup. This enables us to build a workflow to distribute streaming media; a media file gets encoded to the preferred file formats and one or more thumbnails are generated. This workflow which prepares i.e. a video for Web-TV use, is handled by Episode Engine from Telestream.

In 2008 Xstream started using object oriented programming using the Zend Framework. This means enhanced software stability and rapidity.

Streaming and hosting technologies

Besides PHP applications, Xstream builds Rich Internet Applications such as video players, graphs, navigation modules as well as several other customer specific modules. These are made in Flash (AS3/Flex) and Silverlight 3 (C#).

We also provide Windows Media hosting on Windows 2008 servers. For WMV as well as Flash streaming we support both vendors Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies whether the player is WMV, Silverlight or Flash which enables our customers to reach audiences on both Windows & Mac.

We provide mobile streaming via our QuickTime servers and we use DeviceAtlas to control handset detection to ensure that we distribute the right media format to a specific mobile unit.

We have also established a streaming Flash cluster to execute live Flash transmissions.

Xstream uses standards such as RSS/Atom feeds to exchange data. For protected data we operate with both XML-RPC and SOAP integration.
